Each year we went, we ate, we worked and we made memories. After I went away to college and later moved away from home, I still came back each year. Although I had long "outgrown" the small country church, the annual BBQ was home to me..and I knew it meant so much to my mom. All the proceeds went to the cemetery fund and that was a cause she was close to as so many of her family (and of course mine) were buried there. The funny thing is I grew up playing in the cemetery, we played "hopscotch" on the foot stones, we had seances, and played hide n seek. I guess living so close to what we called a "graveyard" made me totally at peace with it and totally unafraid.
The BBQ that is etched in my memory is the one in 2002 which unfortunately was also the last time I saw my mom alive. I don't remember how much time I actually spent with her that night, I don't know what I said, but I do know I said "I love you" before I went home. I was newly married (for only a few weeks) so I imagine I was busy talking to people about that. I really meant to see her soon afterward. We had just returned from our honeymoon in Spain and I had a photo album I put together that I wanted her to see. They had travelled to the same area of Spain years before so I was anxious to "compare notes" with her. I know I talked to her on a Sunday on the way home from the lake...I told her I would see her on Tuesday. I don't remember now why I changed it to Thursday...I really don't. I just know that on Wednesday night I got a call that would shake me to the core. My dad came home from work and found my mom on the kitchen floor. She died suddenly from a brain aneurysm and I was left wondering why I hadn't seen her in a few weeks. It took me a long time to deal with the regret of that two day change of plans decision....
So this weekend we went to the BBQ as usual and it was so fun watching Annslee run around, laugh and "shop" at the country store like I used to. I somehow now think it is fitting that I saw my mom last in this place that meant so much to her....I only wish she could have met her grand daughter..they would have been big buds!

It's been awhile since I've checked your blog and what a beautiful post I find! Thank you for sharing these precious memories. So often we don't understand God's timing, but what a beautiful way to remember the last moments with your mother. God bless! Can't wait to browse through your recent posts to see what I've missed in the last month.
What a sweet post - you know I'm crying now and understand your feelings. I hate those regrets of wishing you'd made different decisions. And I hate the feeling of knowing that your parent won't have the chance to be the wonderful grandparent they would have been. I'm glad that the last time you had together was such a nice day with so much tradition in it. I'm sure it's been incredibly tough to go back to that BBQ but I hope it can bring you some solace and peace too. Sounds like Annslee definitely had you smiling, imagine that!
Laura--I am so sorry that what once held great memories for you now leaves you with mixed emotions. I am sorry that you didn't get to see your mom before she was gone. Regret can be a hard pill to swallow. May Annslee know her by the way you keep the memory of your mom alive.
Wow loveey post, I bet she was there Love knows no bounds.

Beautiful post, I'm glad you have Annslee (and next year Malia) to share those memories of your mother and what that BBQ means to you.

This is such a sweet tribute to your mom. She sounds like an amazing lady. It is neat to see the tradition continue with family. I am sure your mom was smiling from above.

That's so sad about your mom, it made me cry.
I am sure she is looking down on all of you and looking at what a wonderful mother you are and what a great family you have.
I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. I agree that she must be very proud of you and what a wonderful mommy you are!
oh these momma stories make me cry on a dime. Thanks for your well wishes to me today. My birthday is always tainted ever so slightly knowing it was the day SHE created me and is no longer here to feel me love her so.
It has been 12 years for me. The feelings never go away. Don't let people let you either.
I saw that they were having this on TV and I immediately thought about you and your family. Being a "small town"girl myself, I know there is nothing more fun than those church picnics. I think it's wonderful that you are continuing the tradition with Annslee. I'm thinking about you guys a lot and hope to see you soon!
Love,

I am so sorry to hear about your mom. It is so tragic. I am sure your mom was with you at the BBQ - watching your little girl.
That is a beautiful post. I am sure your mama was with you & Annslee at that picnic... just in spirit:)
I'm so sorry your mom didn't get to meet your sweet daughter. That was a beautiful post and it's obvious that the two of you had a wonderful relationship.
What a beautiful post! I am sure that your Mom was smiling at all of you during your return to the church BBQ. What great memories you are making for your family now!
Wow! Annslee you are so courageous riding the camel. You go "Lil Sista."
